Empowering Environmental Education in Sonoma County

In September 2023, a remarkable initiative to enhance outdoor education for our youth took a significant step forward. That was thanks to generous grassroots funding from the Riddell Family and an inspiring collaboration between LandPaths and the Community Foundation of Sonoma County. The Sonoma Environmental Education Collaborative (SEEC) has embarked on a mission to ensure that every child in under-resourced schools in Sonoma County has access to transformative outdoor experiences. Through the “Pathways Project,” students in grades K-6 will engage in four unique outdoor experiences.

This school year marks an exciting chapter for the county-wide Environmental Education Pathways Project. Pepperwood is proud to serve 23 classes across seven local elementary schools through our Students Conducting Environmental Inquiry (SCENIQ) program. Now in its third consecutive year of the Pathways Project, it has successfully established a coordinated series of environmental science and nature programs tailored for our region’s students. Each year, these experiences are designed to build on students’ prior learning. This format creates a more comprehensive understanding of environmental science.

The Pathways Project has Collaboration at its Core The strength of the Pathways Project lies in its collaborative nature, bringing together 13 local environmental organizations, including Pepperwood. We are working to provide robust programming for 32 Title I schools in Sonoma County. This initiative vastly increases access to the outdoors and high-quality experiential education, particularly for underserved communities. As we look ahead, SEEC is actively strategizing to secure ongoing financial support to sustain the momentum generated by this initial funding. This move ensures the program’s impact continues well into the next school year and beyond.

SEEC is a regional consortium of environmental education professionals from a variety of nonprofit organizations, agencies, and school districts. Our goal is to enhance best practices and foster creative exchanges of ideas within the science and nature education community. Pepperwood has been a leading partner in SEEC since its inception. Moreover, Pepperwood has helped to guide SEEC’s mission to create vibrant, innovative collaborations that boost environmental literacy among Sonoma County youth and residents of all ages.

Empowering the Next Generation Each year, SEEC reaches over 25,000 students and community members! We also prioritize professional development for educators, hosting workshops focused on best practices in environmental education, tailored to the needs and interests of the SEEC community.
